Description

Youth who present anti-social behavior need powerful interventions that strengthen empathy, counter negative peer influence, and challenge thinking errors. EQUIP is a Positive Peer Culture (PPC)-based cognitive behavioral intervention program for at-risk youth. Two types of group sessions are held. In Mutual Help Meetings, youth support one another in resolving problems in a climate of caring. In Equipment Meetings, an adult leader equips youth with specific skills by instruction in moral judgment, anger management/correction of thinking errors, and prosocial skills. Research on EQUIP was instrumental in designation of PPC as an evidence-based intervention. The EQUIP model is a synergy of the backgrounds of the authors: Gibbs is a moral development researcher, Potter is a Positive Peer Culture trainer, and Goldstein piloted programs for anger management and social skill instruction.

Reviews

For the first time, ‘What we know’ and ‘what we know works’ have been distilled into a highly readable, scientifically proven intervention program for antisocial youth.”
—Laurie Rice, Journal for Juvenile Justice and Detention Services

Gibbs and colleagues provide the reader with a succinct but clear conceptual understanding of the causes of antisocial behavior, cognitive treatment strategies, and methods to empirically validate the effectiveness of interventions.”
—John Lemmon, Juvenile Justice Update

“The beauty of this book is its organization and practicality. The EQUIP Program is realistic and would be beneficial for teachers, principals, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and those interested in making a positive impact on youth.”
—Carol A. Yeager, The Peer Facilitator Quarterly
